Guess Which Celebrity Babies Were Born via Surrogate in 2022

Parents-to-be across the U.S. have been turning to surrogacy for various reasons in 2022. Many celebrity parents who have chosen birth via surrogate are using their platforms to celebrate the women who helped them and to champion this alternative path to parenthood.

Surrogacy is a multi-step process that involves egg and sperm donation, embryo creation, and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Individuals or couples can have a baby with their own genetics, carried to term, and delivered by someone else.

There are two different forms of surrogacy:

Traditional Surrogacy

In traditional surrogacy, a surrogate uses her own egg to conceive the child. Sperm is either donated through a sperm bank or provided by the aspiring parent and gets fertilized with the surrogate’s eggs.

The child would then be genetically related to the sperm donor and the surrogate. Traditional surrogacy is rare these days and even prohibited in many locations.

Gestational Surrogacy

A gestational surrogate, conversely, is not genetically related to the child. In gestational surrogacy, an egg and sperm get fertilized externally to create an embryo, and the embryo is transferred to the surrogate mother via IVF.

Depending on who the Intended Parents are, they may have supplied one of these samples or both.

Gestational surrogacy is expensive, costing north of $100,000 to complete. However, this doesn’t deter folks looking to build their families. Eighteen thousand four hundred babies were born via a surrogate from 1999 to 2013. Because of health law privacy restrictions, more recent numbers are unavailable at this time.
